The city and its bazaars
The bazaar in Baku is an ancient tradition. For centuries here, at the crossroads of East and West, the trade routes met, and the market was not only a place of shopping but a centre of city life. That tradition lives on today: the people of Baku still love to buy their food at the bazaar.
Among the city's markets the Teze Bazar ('New Bazaar') and the Yaşıl Bazar ('Green Bazaar') are especially well known. Fruit and vegetables are brought here from across Azerbaijan: from the warm south, from the mountain districts, from Absheron. So the stalls always hold the ripest and most seasonal goods.
Yaşıl Bazar
The Green Bazaar is rows of fresh produce under a roof: greens and vegetables, fruit and pomegranates, spices and dried fruit, cheese and pickles. The name 'Green' speaks for itself: there is always an armful of fresh coriander, dill, tarragon and other greens here, without which Azerbaijani cuisine is unthinkable.
From all over the country to one stall
Azerbaijan is a land generous with its harvest: fruit, vegetables, nuts, pomegranates, tea. All of it flows to the bazaars of Baku. In summer the stalls are heaped with peaches, figs, grapes and tomatoes, in autumn come persimmons and pomegranates, and dried fruit, nuts and spices are there all year round.
